The DCF13 Double-Clad Fiber features a single mode core and dual cladding structure that allows both single mode and multimode light to propagate through the fiber. Single mode light travels in the Ø9 µm core of the fiber, while multimode light propagates in the Ø105 µm inner "1st cladding".
Double-clad fiber is used in Thorlabs’ Double-Clad Fiber Couplers, where the core carries a single-mode signal and the 1st cladding is used to efficiently transfer a multimode signal to the coupled multimode fiber. Other applications include CATV pump/signal couplers and light delivery/collection in fluorescence imaging.
